How to Measure for a Washer Dryer Countertop?

The appliance measurements above are general averages, not universal standards. Large-capacity models may be wider or deeper, while compact machines may be narrower. Always check the specifications for the washer and dryer you own.

1. Measure the Actual Installed Width

Measure from the outside left edge of the washer to the outside right edge of the dryer.

Include the gap between the machines. Do not measure each appliance separately and simply add the two listed widths.

For example, two 27-inch machines have a combined body width of about 54 inches. If your appliance instructions require space between them, the installed span may be closer to 55 inches or more. A 53.94-inch topper should not be assumed to fit that setup without checking where its underside will rest.

Follow the clearances required by the appliance manufacturers. Whirlpool, for example, recommends allowing space between side-by-side machines and additional room around the appliances for ventilation and connections. Do not push the machines closer together solely to make a countertop fit.

2. Measure the Flat, Usable Depth

Next, measure the flat top surface from front to back.

3. Compare the Height of Both Machines

Measure each appliance from the floor to the top surface.

The washer and dryer should be level and close to the same height. A rigid topper may rock or shift if one machine sits noticeably higher than the other.

For example, if your machines are 39 inches high and the overhead cabinet begins at 54 inches, you have 15 inches of space above the appliances. An 11.02-inch countertop unit would physically fit, but it would leave less than 4 inches above the upper shelf—too little for most laundry baskets or detergent bottles.

Measure both the product height and the items you plan to store.

Pedestals also affect this calculation. Depending on the model, adding pedestals to front-load appliances can raise them by roughly 10 to 16 inches, potentially placing the countertop at an uncomfortable working height or too close to upper cabinets.

6. Leave Room for Hoses, Vents, and Maintenance

The countertop footprint and the appliance installation clearance are two separate measurements.

Your washer and dryer may need rear space for:

• Water supply hoses
• A drain hose
• Power cords
• A gas connection
• Dryer ductwork
• Water shutoff valves

Whirlpool uses six inches behind the appliances as a general planning guideline, although the correct clearance depends on the specific models and vent configuration.

The countertop should not press hoses or ductwork against the wall. It should also be easy to remove when the machines need cleaning, vent maintenance, or repair.
