The History of Presidents' Day
Often referred to as Washington's Birthday, its origins trace back to 1800, following the death of George Washington in 1799. His birthday on February 22nd became a significant day of remembrance. However, it wasn't until 1885 that it became a federal holiday to honor our first President.
With the implementation of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, Presidents' Day was relocated to the third Monday in February, a move that set the stage for a three-day weekend for the nation's workers. Initially celebrated solely as Washington's birthday, it is now popularly seen as a day to celebrate all U.S. Presidents, particularly Washington and Lincoln, whose birthday also falls in February.
Despite being declared a federal holiday, how Presidents' Day is observed can vary considerably by state. Standard activities typically include patriotic displays, as well as events and staged productions at schools and community theaters to teach and celebrate America's presidential history. In Alexandria, Virginia—George Washington's hometown—the holiday spans the entire month of February, culminating in a grand parade. Mount Vernon, Washington's family estate, offers free entrance on Presidents' Day.
So, Presidents' Day, in essence, is about remembering and appreciating the contributions past presidents have made towards shaping the nation. It's a day to reflect on the history and to foster an understanding of the significant role held by everyone who has had the honor of serving as the President of the United States.
