File Cabinets FAQs
Not at all—file cabinets are far from outdated. In fact, with more people working from home and needing to keep personal documents, tax records, or business files organized, a modern wooden filing cabinet can be both practical and stylish.
Many of our designs double as office cabinets, printer stands, so you're getting function and aesthetics in one.
Start with clearly labeled folders—hanging file folders for categories, then subfolders inside for specifics. Use one drawer for active documents and another for long-term storage.
Our 2 drawer file cabinets make this super easy, especially with designs that fit letter and legal-size files. Bonus tip? Keep a pen and notepad or labeling stickers in the top drawer for quick updates.
Here's what we recommend looking at when choosing the right filing cabinet for your home or professional office:
1. Cabinet Height:
If you’re working with limited space or planning to place the office cabinet under or beside a desk, height matters a lot.
A standard desk height in the U.S. is around 29–30 inches, so look for file cabinets 27–28 inches tall if you want it to slide underneath.
Need surface space for a printer or office supplies? Consider one of our desk-height lateral file cabinets—they double as a printer stand or side table.
2. Number of Drawers
A 2-drawer file cabinet works great for personal use or small business setups. One drawer for active files, one for archives—simple and efficient.
Some of our models also feature open shelving or cubbies for books, supplies, or décor—great for making the most out of every inch.
3. Drawer Dimensions
This is one of the most common pain points—many generic cabinets don’t fit hanging folders properly.
Letter-size folders (8.5" x 11") are the U.S. standard; make sure the internal drawer width is at least 12.5–13 inches.
Legal-size folders (8.5" x 14") require more depth; look for drawers that are at least 16 inches deep.
Most of our office cabinets clearly list whether they support letter, legal, or A4 formats, and many have adjustable rails to switch between them.
4. Mobility & Versatility
Want flexibility in your workspace? Choose a mobile filing cabinet with lockable wheels—easy to reposition and clean around.
Prefer something more permanent? A stationary wooden filing cabinet with sturdy feet can double as a small storage console or nightstand.
5. Aesthetic & Finish
Your office shouldn’t feel like a corporate cubicle—unless that’s the look you want. Our wooden filing cabinets come in rustic oak, modern matte black, and mid-century walnut finishes to match any interior vibe.
So whether you’re outfitting a cozy home office or adding function to a guest bedroom, there’s a style and size that will work for you.
It really depends on your space and how you’ll use it.
- Wooden file cabinets (like our bestsellers) are warm, home-friendly, and blend well with other furniture.
- Metal file cabinets are classic for commercial or heavy-duty use.
- Wood + metal blends offer the best of both—sturdy frame, modern look.
If you’re going for an office cabinet that complements your space while offering real durability, wood or mixed-material styles are a great pick.
There are a few popular office cabinets types:
- Vertical file cabinets – Compact and great for tight spaces.
- Lateral file cabinets – Wider, with drawers that extend side-to-side—great for bigger storage needs.
- Mobile file cabinets – On wheels for easy movement, like our printer-compatible filing cabinets.
- Multifunction file cabinets – With open shelves or cabinets built-in, perfect for mixed use.
You’ll find most of these styles in our collection—especially in 2-drawer file cabinets designed for real-world flexibility.
Yes! Our two-drawer cabinet has adjustable rails to keep your letters, legal documents, and A4 files organized. The drawers are fully expandable for easy access. Each cabinet has slightly different dimensions, so please confirm the dimensions and weight of the product before placing your order, which will help you enjoy your purchase.
Many of our filing cabinets do come with a built-in lock, typically for the top drawer. This is ideal for keeping sensitive documents or valuables secure.
